5G Delta-Sigma Modulation on FPGAs
This crucial piece of CableLabs’ system enabled their platform to more effectively and reliably process signals.
The Client
CableLabs is the leading innovation and R&D lab for the global cable and broadband industry. As a nonprofit consortium backed by the world’s largest cable operators, CableLabs drives cutting-edge technology development in connectivity, wireless, network security, and immersive media. Known for shaping key standards like DOCSIS and pioneering advances in broadband infrastructure, CableLabs brings together top-tier engineering talent and a collaborative spirit to solve some of the most complex challenges in modern communication. Their work accelerates the future of high-speed, low-latency networks—powering everything from smart homes to next-generation content delivery.
The Challenge
CableLabs came to LeafLabs with the need for an updated FPGA solution to handle the Delta-Sigma modulation of an analog LTE/5G signal. Precise timing and coefficient selection were critical aspects required of the FPGA system.
The Approach
Precise timing and coefficient tuning were central to the success of this FPGA-based system. LeafLabs applied deep expertise in FPGA development and hardware-level optimization to ensure timing closure across a complex processing pipeline—delivering a stable, high-performance platform aligned with CableLabs’ technical requirements.
Beyond initial delivery, LeafLabs continued to collaborate closely with CableLabs to refine system behavior. This included updating key signal processing coefficients to adapt to evolving goals and use cases. By remaining engaged and responsive, we helped extend the utility of the system and demonstrated our commitment to long-term client success.
Some of our most impactful partnerships, including this one, are built on continued collaboration—whether to maintain our own work, upgrade a deployed system, or tackle entirely new engineering challenges.
The Impact
The FPGA system developed for CableLabs not only met stringent timing and performance requirements—it also proved adaptable in the face of evolving technical needs. By enabling accurate, low-latency processing and allowing for future coefficient tuning, the platform supported CableLabs’ mission to explore and validate next-generation broadband technologies.
Our continued engagement ensured the system remained aligned with emerging use cases, extending its value and impact beyond the initial scope. The collaboration exemplifies how strong engineering partnerships can deliver both immediate results and long-term innovation.
